What is the true impact of AI at work?

From geopolitical tensions to the energy transition, the world of work is undergoing dramatic changes. Among the most significant megatrends shaping the future of work globally is the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In just a few years, AI has evolved from a buzzword into a transformative force reshaping industries and workforces. Organisations are already seeing measurable impacts from AI, and success in the future will depend on empowering workforces to adapt and thrive.

The Adecco Group’s 2024 Global Workforce of the Future Report examined AI’s impact across 20 industries and 27 countries. Drawing insights from over 35,000 interviews, the report highlights how AI is having a more profound impact than workers anticipated and underscores the need for employers to support their teams in adapting to this new landscape.

Navigating Uncertainty

AI-driven change has emerged as a significant concern for workers worldwide. According to our research:

  • 40% of workers are worried about long-term job security due to AI.
  • In 2023, 13% of workers reported losing their jobs due to AI, compared to just 8% in 2022.
  • 21% of workers are considering a change of profession because of AI—nearly double the number from last year.

Combined with economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability, these challenges are making job security a priority for workers, with 83% planning to stay with their current employer—the highest rate in three years.

Workers in New Zealand are no exception. While AI creates uncertainty, it also offers an opportunity to upskill and future-proof careers. Kiwi workers increasingly look to their employers for career guidance and training to prepare for a rapidly changing job market.

Employers’ Role in AI Transformation

Employers in New Zealand have a unique opportunity to embrace AI-driven change and empower their workforce to thrive. Here’s how organisations can adapt:

  1. Upskilling and Reskilling Programs:
Investing in AI-related training ensures workers can adapt to new technologies. This benefits employees individually while boosting organisational resilience and competitiveness.
  2. Strategic Career Guidance:
Providing equitable access to learning opportunities helps build an adaptable, future-ready workforce. Employers should also communicate openly about AI’s potential benefits and challenges.
  3. Transparent Leadership:
Future-focused leadership is essential. Employers must assess how AI will impact their organisation and guide workers through these changes with clarity and empathy.

By addressing these areas, businesses can unlock the combined potential of AI and human talent, fostering innovation and driving long-term success.
